Creative Strings Workshops- Locations in 2020

Are you ready to change the way you make music?

The workshops are perfect for you if you’re a bowed string player of any age and you’d like to:

-Become comfortable with improvisation, contemporary styles, and related subjects

-Play music other than classical

-Attract a wider range of professional opportunities.

Teachers, the workshops are a good fit for you if you’d like to:

-Give your students the skills and confidence to try something new on their own

-Show them that there is more music that they can make beyond classical

-Provide curriculum relevant to their needs

I'll be back next year, and the next

I left cherishing the music I have to share. I took away a re-kindled desire to keep at it, to learn the tools with patience and dedication. To leave my ego out of it, and walk toward a goal, with no need to get there. I'll be back next year, and the next.

Creative Strings Workshop began 17 years ago with a vision to connect innovators in the string playing community.

It’s become a catalyst for musicians worldwide; a destination where purpose-driven artists converge to charge the soul.

If you’ve been before, you know what I mean. This is something you’ve simply got to experience.

  • Growth in mindset- Step out of your routine to experience new breakthroughs.
  • Collaboration– Connecting with creative musicians means you’re with potential collaborators, (& maybe even new BFF’s).
  • Connection- Working with an inspiring teacher, interacting in ensembles, connecting on a musical and human level, can change your belief in what’s possible.
  • Exposure- When you’re there, there’s just something in the air. It changes you.
  • Opportunity– There are so many new opportunities available to musicians with the right combinations of skills and knowledge to seize them.
  • Contribution– Come, learn, take back and give back to your community, ensembles, or studio.

Take a second to think about the possibilities that come from sitting in a room alongside others who need no introduction to how you think musically. They don’t just understand it, they live it everyday. Those are the people who can help you take your art, and career, to the next level.

Nothing but the best

I’m floored and grateful for all Chris's very helpful advice. I’ve heard nothing about the best about Chris and that certainly shows here. His advice is heartfelt, generous and cogent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these events suitable for my age, background, and level?

Most of the events are suitable for ages 14 and up, and open to a wide range of levels including teens, college, seniors, professional players, teachers, and amateurs.

We welcome players of all backgrounds, whether classical, fiddling, or other!

Previous experience with improvisation or contemporary styles of playing and teaching is NOT required.

The Columbus Youth Program is designed for ages 10-14.

The Columbus Adult Program and CSW Europe, is designed for ages 14 and up.

Asheville is designed for ages 18 and up, however we will make exceptions for some students under 18 provided that we can have a conversation with the parent first and/or the parent is willing to attend.

What if I’m already super advanced at classical, jazz, or fiddle styles? Will I be challenged?

Can you play Giant Steps at 250BPM  improvising double stops without repeating yourself?

Can you play Sally Goodin at fast tempo  in any key and any position?

You will be challenged.

What’s the difference between events in each city?

Columbus– Our flagship event of 18 years running welcomes 15 guest artist instructors, and you will work in chamber ensembles, and perform in many concerts around Columbus. It’s a huge party for 6 full days.

Europe (Lausanne, Switzerland) – Features three instructors, a smaller festival, for three full days.

Asheville: a 5-day intimate experience in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains with a limited size group (approx 15 total). Most of this emphasizes small class instruction with Christian, outings, and working with a few other guests.

Singapore, Manhattan, Bangkok, Australia- The two-day bootcamps are group lessons scheduled from 10am-6pm. Christian will take you through extensive playing sequences and share his entire curriculum. These are often paired with small performances, meals, and get-togethers. Often include seminars on entrepreneurship.
