If you’re still not sure that this is an amazing opportunity, here’s more information to help you decide.

About me, Christian Howes:

Classically trained from age 5, I became hungry for new challenges in my teens.

That curiosity helped me develop skills to go beyond classical, freedom to find my creative voice, and eventually, a desire to teach what I learned.

While teaching as an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, my work was adopted, and is still used, as required study for all string majors.

I decided to create an affordable online alternative, and since then I’ve taught classes at Juilliard, Eastman, Oberlin, Miami, and other colleges, schools, and conferences, while refining my curriculum.

Players who credit my teaching:

Michael Doucet- Grammy-winning Cajun fiddler

Aubrey Haney- The most widely recorded Nashville Session Player today.

Leah Zeger (Hans Zimmer), Alex Hargreaves (Chris Thile), Andrea Whitt (Shania Twain)

Mike Barnett (Ricky Skaggs), Jeremy Kittle (Turtle Island Quartet), Jason Anick (Rhythm Future Quartet)

“I consider Chris Howes to be among the top 5 best jazz violinists of the new generation.

Gain A Clear Method for Harmony, Improvisation, & Contemporary Styles

1) Harmony: Busting the Myth of “Having a Good Ear”

Even if you have studied music theory, many string players struggle to hear and apply harmony.

It’s just because of the ways we were trained, but it sometimes causes us to feel like there’s something wrong with us.

We’re led to assume, “If I just listen and try harder, I’ll get it.”

This doesn’t work. Instead, it causes wasted time, frustration, and limiting beliefs such as “Maybe  I’m just not a creative type”…

or,  “I may never be able to learn to improvise before I retire…”

Like most Suzuki kids, I was proud of my ears, until I tried to recognize other types of melodies and harmonies.

When I joined a rock band in high school, my bandmates seemed to understand the music more easily.

  • I couldn’t recognize notes below the register of the violin
  • I couldn’t recognize chords
  • I couldn’t recognize melodies which were different than classical

Playing rock music was difficult, even though I enjoyed listening to it.

Finally, by combining active listening with reading, my ears developed faster.  I’ll teach you how to easily make this shift.

How to Visualize Harmony on a String Instrument:

I struggled for a long time to find the chords on the violin fingerboard.

Then I discovered that visualizing harmony on paper could speed up the process, like training wheels on a bike.

I developed a visual diagram to help see the connections between chord tones, and came up with exercises to internalize it.

After an hour or two with these exercises, you’ll never look at harmony the same way again.

Once you understand that, I’ll show you:

– the quickest ways to memorize harmony without the diagram.

– the ultimate scale and arpeggio resources for violin, viola, and cello.

-how to master more complex harmonies

The best part:  Instead of practicing more, you’ll accomplish more by changing the way you practice.

2) Styles: Once you figure out the harmonic piece of the puzzle, playing many different styles is a lot easier.  I’ll help you understand the differences between fiddle tunes, pop, Latin, Jazz, and other styles so you can sound authentic pretty quickly. We’ll look at the different rhythmic conventions within the melodies, bass lines, inner voices, and grooves.

3) Master Your Creative Process

Do you ever feel like you’re just going through the motions with scales and repertoire?

I’ll show you how to create something new every time you pick up your instrument, regardless of your technical ability or comfort with theory. After just five minutes with my Free Improvisation course I guarantee you will be creating things you never thought possible.

Classical training is great for some things, but it leaves gaps in our musical skills.

I’ll help you bridge that gap efficiently by addressing Harmony, Style & Rhythmic Forms, & Your Creative Process.

Whether you’re just beginning to go beyond classical, an intermediate improviser, or an advanced jazz player, you’ll become a more versatile and creative player (or teacher) with access to all course materials, including video trainings, downloadable PDF’s, and backing tracks.
